SGIA’s HazMat Training Prevents Costly Compliance Mistakes -Two-day seminar before SGIA ’07 fulfills mandated certification, education

Fairfax, Virginia — Small shipping mistakes of hazardous materials that fail to follow government guidelines can bankrupt a specialty imaging company. HazMat expert Erik Reed, who leads SGIA’s Hazardous Materials Transportation Training seminar (October 2223), has seen it happen.

“I’ve seen an air shipment go out with less than 5 ounces of liquid, get caught by regulatory officials — because it was hazardous material — and end up costing the company a $72,000 fine,” said Reed, Regulatory Compliance Manager, Nazdar. It’s a scenario all specialty imagers face. “They’re working in a chemical environment, where sooner or later they are going to have to ship [hazardous] materials or waste,” Reed said.

Non-certified businesses don’t just risk high fines: Shipping companies are known to cut off relationships with businesses that fail to follow the industry’s strict hazardous material shipping rules.

To help imaging companies prevent these problems and take care of mandated employee training, SGIA offers its two-day HazMat seminar before the action starts at SGIA ’07 (Orlando, Florida; October 2427, 2007).

Reed takes attendees through the U.S. Department of Transportation and International Air Transport Association regulations that directly affect specialty imagers. “The value of the course and what attendees get out of it make it extremely economical,” Reed said.

“Anywhere else, and this kind of course is usually pushing $1,000 per person,” he said, noting safety professionals from other industries have attended SGIA’s HazMat seminar because of its quality and value.
