USSC Impacts Planners at American Planning Association Conference With Latest Research Data
The United States Sign Council recently attended the American Planning Association's (APA) National Conference April 9-13th, held this year in New Orleans, LA. The annual APA Conference provides an opportunity for USSC to speak one-on-one with planners from across the country in a relaxed atmosphere. The USSC has set a priority on attending and exhibiting at the APA national event annually in order to facilitate a dialogue with the planning community on issues that are vital to the sign industry.
USSC's theme for this year's conference was our new Sign Illumination Guide. The 2010 Sign Illumination Guide, titled On-Premise Sign Lighting: Terms, Definitions, Measurement, was created in response to the growing interest of communities in regulating sign illumination. USSC discovered that there is much confusion about lighting terms and how sign lighting can be measured, and the Lighting Guide is a valuable resource for both sign companies and local regulators.
The Lighting Guide and copies of the (4) current USSC lighting research reports were distributed on CD free of charge at the USSC Booth to APA attendees, along with other related USSC research materials.
In addition, USSC brought light meters to the exhibit hall booth, capable of determining both sign luminance (brightness) and sign illuminance (so-called light trespass). APA attendees were given the opportunity to work with the meters and discover how sign illumination can be measured in the field. USSC found that its research and materials were welcomed by the planners, and many questions and positive comments were received.
Attending the conference and working at the USSC booth were: Nancy Maren - USSC Executive Director, Perry Cook - USSC President, Paul Tripp - USSC Board Member, Phil Garvey - Larson Transportation Institute at Penn State University, and Rick Crawford - USSC Legislative Consultant.
