Outdoor Advertising Industry Recycles 1.5 Million Pounds of Single Sheet Posters

Washington In the first seven months of 2010, the outdoor advertising industry recycled 1.56 million pounds of the PE (polyethylene) substrate on which billboards are printed. This represents a better than 100 percent increase over recycling in 2009, the first year in which the industry engaged in a coordinated recycling program.

“This is important to our advertisers, to our companies, and to the environment,” said Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) President and CEO Nancy Fletcher. “It’s another way the outdoor advertising industry is showing itself to be the future’s medium.”

More than 70 percent of all poster size billboards in the United States now use recyclable substrates.

OAAA members work primarily with Avangard Innovative in Houston, TX, to process their used PE substrates. Avangard recycles the PE into a variety of new products, including flower containers.

The industry’s recycling program officially began in March, 2009.

OAAA is the trade association for nearly 800 outdoor advertising companies which make up 90 percent of the industry’s revenue. It is dedicated to leading and uniting a responsible outdoor advertising industry that is committed to serving the needs of advertisers, consumers, and communities. Outdoor advertising companies generate $5.9 billion annually in ad revenues and donate space to charitable organizations in excess of $400 million each year.
