SEGD Event Explores “The Skinnable Space”

Washington, D.C. — Today’s dynamic spaces are not just lights and flash, but living, breathing organisms that can react and transform in response to a variety of environmental and sociological conditions. These “Skinnable Spaces” are the focus of SEGD’s fourth annual Dynamic Environments workshop November 11-12 in Las Vegas.

In one of the most dynamic and entertaining cities in the world, the two-day workshop will explore how today’s dynamic environments are created by multidisciplinary, collaborative teams using palettes of light, sound, imagery, and information.

At multiple Las Vegas venues—from the Cirque du Soleil’s Viva ELVIS show at the new Aria Resort at CityCenter to the Las Vegas Boneyard—attendees will go behind the scenes of high-profile dynamic projects, learn about the latest dynamic technologies, and hear from thought leaders about the future of spatial, dynamic design.

Speakers include David Mexico, principal with the Rockwell Group, one of the lead designers on CityCenter’s iconic Crystals Retail & Entertainment venue; Chaki Ng of the MIT Media Lab and Harvard University on advances in RFID and dynamic wayfinding; and award-winning production, theater, and lighting designers including Chris Kenner, Anthony Ricotta, Ivan Dudynsky, and Martin Lebrecque.

“Las Vegas is the perfect setting for a conversation about Dynamic Environments,” says Phil Lenger, president of Show+Tell (New York) and a member of the SEGD Board of Directors. “It epitomizes the word ‘dynamic’ and, as a Mecca for theatrical stage production, it can also teach us a lot about how theater can inform the creation of dynamic places.”

On Thursday morning, November 11, the workshop will kick off with a series of presentations and panel discussions at the Viva ELVIS Theatre at the Aria Resort & Casino, part of Las Vegas’ new urban resort destination, CityCenter. Thursday afternoon, the event will move to CityCenter’s Vdara Hotel & Spa for an afternoon focused on “Content and the Interactive Space.” Friday, November 12, attendees will tour venues such as the Las Vegas Boneyard, the Fremont Street Experience, the Beatles REVOLUTION Lounge at The Mirage, and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s interactive and social media systems.

The event is part of SEGD’s continuing efforts to provide educational resources for designers and design leaders involved in media-rich projects in the built environment.

“The world of media and communication technology continues to change at a rapid- fire pace, and collaborators on these projects are continually finding new and innovative ways to create dynamic environments,” says Ann Makowski, SEGD’s interim executive director. “SEGD’s goal is to provide a venue for sharing these new developments and best practices.”

Dynamic Environments 4 is intended for designers, architects, exhibition designers, art directors, advertising agencies, real estate developers, fabricators, manufacturers, and technology consultants involved in the planning, design, construction, or implementation of dynamic environments.

Sponsors for the event include Daktronics (lead sponsor), Barco, The Barnycz Group, D3 LED, Prysm, YESCO, Edwards Technologies, GKD-USA, Show+Tell, SignComp, and Space150.
