United States Sign Council Awards Perry Cook the Prestigious Fred Wieder Memorial Award

Bristol, PA - - The United States Sign Council recently chose Perry Cook of Perry Cook Signs in Richland, VA to receive the prestigious Fred Wieder Memorial Award for Service Above Self. Since it was first established in 1989, the Fred Wieder Memorial Award has been given only ten times to deserving recipients. Perry Cook is the 11th recipient of this award that honors the USSC member who has shown extraordinary service to the USSC organization and whose work has made a significant contribution toward the betterment of the sign industry. The award is only presented when outstanding service needs to be recognized.

To understand the significance of this award, it is important to take a few moments to talk about the person for whom it is named. Fred Wieder was one of the original founders of the Eastern States Sign Council representing the New York State Sign Association. A rabbi by avocation and a sign person by training, Fred combined his extraordinary talents to assist in bringing together this first diverse group of leaders and to form what today has become the largest organization of independent sign shops in the nation - - the United States Sign Council. This award memorializes an individual who has demonstrated in both his or her personal and business life what service above self truly means.

Perry Cook truly exemplifies the term “service above self”. Perry was one of the first members to join the Sign Council, early on recognizing the importance of a national organization that would be there to serve the many independent sign shops across the country. He was initially elected to the Board of Directors in 1997 and served 2 terms until 2002. In 2006 he was once again elected to the Board and served as both Vice President and President of the Board of Directors. He has helped on numerous projects undertaken by the board including the recent Finance Committee. But his most notable accomplishment is his work in the BullPen with the Boys & Girls from the two organizations. You can tell just by looking at him that Perry is in his glory when he is working in the BullPen.

All of this effort is done on a strictly volunteer basis and Perry does it with a great big smile and a warm southern welcome to all who are there.
