SEGD Welcomes Seven New Members to Diverse, International Board of Directors

WASHINGTON, D.C. – SEGD, the Society for Environmental Graphic Design, announced the appointment of seven new members to its international Board of Directors. Amy Lukas, principal of Infinite Scale (Salt Lake City) and a board member since 2007, is the new board president, succeeding Wayne McCutcheon, principal of Entro Communications (Toronto).

New board members include:

  • Patrick Angelel, principal, CREO Industrial Arts (Everett, Wash.)
  • Sander Baumann, principal, designworkplan (Amsterdam)
  • Moira Gemmill, director of design, Victoria & Albert Museum (London)
  • Dan Moalli, vice president, Design and Production Inc. (Lorton, Va.)
  • Julie Vogel, principal, Kate Keating Associates (San Francisco)
  • Leslie Wolke, principal, Leslie Wolke Consulting (Austin, Texas)
  • Joe Zenas, CEO, Thinkwell Group (Burbank, Calif.)
Their terms begin in January 2012.

“We’re pleased to welcome an outstanding group of professionals to the SEGD Board of Directors and we look forward to the creative energy that Amy Lukas will bring as Board President,” says Jessica W. London, SEGD CEO.

The current SEGD Board is the most diverse in the organization’s history, London adds. “We are represented by a group that spans many design disciplines, includes both design firm and industry professionals, and also includes professionals from the client side. In addition, we’ve expanded international representation on the board to reflect our growing membership outside North America.”

The 26-member board is led by a five-member Executive Committee including Amy Lukas; Past President Wayne McCutcheon; Treasurer Gary Stemler, archetype (Eagan, Minn.); Senior Vice President Jill Ayers, Design 360 (New York); and Vice President Ed Hofmann, Limited Brands (New York).

The terms of six veteran board members ended in 2011: Michael Gericke, Pentagram (New York); Mary Grems, FMG Design (Houston); Kelly Kolar, Kolar Design (Cincinnati); David Middleton, Kent State University (Kent, Ohio); Tali Krakowsky, Apologue Studio (New York); and Phil Lenger, Show + Tell (New York).

“We could speak volumes about the individual contributions that each of these board members has made to SEGD over the years,” London notes. “They have our enduring gratitude and appreciation for their dedication and their countless hours of work on behalf of their peers in the SEGD community.”

Lukas says the Board Development Committee received a record number of more than 40 nominations this year for the board positions. “It’s exciting to realize that so many people in our profession are eager to lend their leadership skills and creativity to the SEGD community. We look forward to the ideas and energy that each of the new members offers.”

Patrick Angelel
CREO Industrial Arts
Patrick Angelel is a principal at CREO Industrial Arts, a custom fabrication company that produces environmental graphics, signage, and specialty items such as custom lighting and street furniture. Angelel graduated from the University of Washington in 1990 with a BA in Business, Marketing Concentration. He has been a guest speaker at UW Business School on multiple occasions through the Foster School’s Mentor Program.

Angelel has been at CREO for six years. He has been an avid contributor to the SEGD Documentation initiative by sharing his knowledge base of documentation standards. He was a co-presenter at SEGD’s Documentation & the Design Process workshop in Boston in 2011. He was also a speaker at the 2011 SEGD Conference in Montreal.

Prior to CREO, Angelel was vice president of marketing for a $200 million enterprise software company. While in that position, he re-branded the company and created a new messaging platform. He also founded Elixis, a high-tech start up that provided one of the first web-based electronic medical records solutions on the market. He later sold the company to GE Medical.

Sander Baumann
Dutch creative designer Sander Baumann founded designworkplan (Amsterdam) in 2007. Baumann studied music and started his career as an entrepreneur organizing music and art parties in Amsterdam. After his musical study, Baumann learned his creativity could also be applied to graphic design. Since 1995, he has worked for various signage companies and focused his work on creative thinking and bringing a sense of place to environments. Over the past 15 years he has designed numerous wayfinding and signage projects, including Holland's largest shopping center, comprehensive city wayfinding, school signage systems, and building identification.

In 2011, Baumann planned and coordinated the SEGD Conference’s “Join and Participate” events including the Face2Face “speed dating” sessions designed to connect conference participants. He was also instrumental in planning the 2011 SEGD European Tour including an SEGD event in Amsterdam.

Moira Gemmill
Victoria & Albert Museum
Moira Gemmill graduated from Glasgow School of Art and initially worked in publishing design. She began her museum career in Aberdeen, Scotland, where she was responsible for exhibition programming and design. She was appointed head of exhibitions and design at the Museum of London in 1998 and in 2002 moved to the Victoria & Albert Museum, where she is currently director of design.

Gemmill is currently responsible for the expression of V&A identity across all media and for planning and implementing V&A’s FuturePlan, the ongoing restoration, refurbishment, and redesign of the museum’s galleries and public spaces.

FuturePlan Phase 1 (2000-2009) comprised more than 40 capital projects. During this time she and her teams of curators, conservators, and educators engaged and worked with some of the best architects, designers, and engineers in the world to reinterpret and redisplay the V&A’s extraordinary collections.

Over the past decade, two-thirds of the V&A’s Grade 1 listed buildings have been transformed. Much of the original architecture has been restored, while integrating bespoke contemporary design commissions and introducing several bold architectural interventions to maximize available space and improve visitor experience. In October 2010, Gemmill was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in recognition of her contribution to architecture and design.

Dan Moalli
Design and Production Inc.
Dan Moalli is vice president of Design and Production Incorporated (D&P), directing the company's business development and marketing activities, working with a diverse portfolio of designers, media producers, and clients worldwide. He has extensive experience in the creation and implementation of immersive environments, interactive and digital media, and the development of large-scale touring exhibitions.

Moalli is an advocate of the design/build process, and has led numerous LEED-certified projects for both public- and private-sector clients. His firm's current projects include the National 9-11 Memorial and Museum, the National Museum of the U.S. Army, and the Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science.

Julie Vogel
Kate Keating Associates
Julie Vogel has been designing signage and wayfinding programs for architecturally significant buildings and environments for more than 20 years. As an accomplished designer and project manager, she brings a rare blend of left- and right-brain capabilities to her projects. She firmly identifies the defining architectural or environmental characteristics of her projects and respects the context of the work. This ability is seen on projects such as the California Academy of Sciences, the new GSA Federal Building in San Francisco, Letterman Digital Arts Center, and the Presidio Masterplan program.

Vogel graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Design, and has focused primarily on environmental graphic design throughout her career. She joined Kate Keating Associates in 1998 and was promoted to principal in 2009.

Leslie Wolke
Leslie Wolke Consulting
As founder and principal of Leslie Wolke Consulting, Leslie Wolke employs technology to address wayfinding and donor recognition needs. From wayfinding websites to interactive donor recognition systems, she has developed innovative solutions in collaboration with a number of respected environmental graphic design firms and large institutional clients.

As associate principal and owner at fd2s Inc. from 2005 to 2009, she built interactive wayfinding tools for The Texas Medical Center, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. As an independent consultant, she has contributed technology and usability expertise to wayfinding projects with The University of California San Francisco Medical Center, New York University Langone Medical Center, and New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.

During her 20 years in the technology and design sectors, Wolke has held leadership positions in the development, operations, and marketing of web-based portals and applications at frogdesign, Hoover’s Online, and Internet service provider SBC | Prodigy Communications.

Wolke received a B.A. in Art History from The University of Chicago, with a specialization in architectural history and theory. She has served as a Visiting Critic at the California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco, and at the Haas School of Business, The University of California at Berkeley.

In 2011, she co-chaired SEGD's first Xlab, an annual innovation, design, and technology conference. She writes about design and technology for segdDESIGN and other publications.

Joe Zenas
Thinkwell Group
As CEO of Thinkwell Group (Burbank, Calif.), Joe Zenas oversees his firm’s work in the design and production of award-winning immersive entertainment experiences. With projects across the globe, Thinkwell provides strategic consulting and design services for entertainment, resort and mixed-use projects worldwide.

Zenas guides Thinkwell operations for the 100-person staff of designers and production specialists through all phases of design and project production. Prior to Thinkwell, he served as director of the Creative Studio for Universal Creative, and also led teams in numerous events ranging from Olympics ceremonies to the reunification of Hong Kong in 1997. He was a featured speaker at SEGD’s Dynamic Environments workshop in 2010.
