Harbinger Sign's Mike Lev Celebrates 21 Years with the Company

Jacksonville, FL – It’s not often in today’s business world that someone starts at the bottom and 21 years later rises to senior management at the same company. Mike Lev, Vice President of Operations at Harbinger Sign, has done it. Luck and lots of hard work at a company that recognized his talents all contributed to his success.

How did this 21-year odyssey begin? Actually, it started more than 40 years ago in Europe. Lev was actually born in Czechoslovakia (before it became the Czech Republic). His family fled the country during a Communist crackdown in 1969 and he ended up in Colorado. That explains his Denver Bronco tattoos. When he graduated high school he decided that it was time to see the world leading to a career with the U.S. Navy.

Part of Lev’s service was on the aircraft carrier U.S. Forrestal, which was then based in Jacksonville. Lev served as an aviation ordnance specialist, loading rockets and bombs on planes on the flight deck. A job fraught with danger but Lev said he never worried about that – just about getting blown off the flight deck.

After six years with the Navy he decided to make Jacksonville his home and moved in with a buddy in Jacksonville who was working for Quality Sign (Harbinger’s former name).

Lev officially started at Quality/Harbinger on March 15, 1993 as an installation helper after working some temporary assignments at other businesses in Jacksonville. His Navy training, which included attention to detail, technical expertise and the importance of collaboration, was a sound basis for learning the sign business.

A quick learner, Lev was soon awarded his own installation truck and became a crew chief. He travelled all over Florida and Georgia on assignments that included everything from Barnett Bank to Panda Express to the conversion of Little Champ convenience stores.

Harbinger Chairman Roger Williams and Chief Executive Officer Steve Williams along with President Tim O’Donnell are very committed to a culture that is forward-thinking and forward-doing. Research and development is high on the list.

“We transitioned to become proficient at LED technology,” said Lev. “Now neon and fluorescent are considered old-school. Paints have become greener. Everything is tied to computers and software. There’s a lot more automation.”

Perhaps the most important aspect to Lev is that the third-generation family-owned business treats its employees well. Harbinger’s ownership stressed the family-friendly aspect making a commitment to all employees as the company grew from 35 employees to more than 80 people with offices in Jacksonville and Dallas.

“Here I feel like I’m family,” added Lev. “My wife, Kitty, has worked at Harbinger for 25 years.”

Sounds like a great place to land after ‘seeing the world.’
