How can I adjust the gloss level of an acrylic polyurethane paint?
Most acrylic polyurethane's are made in a 100% gloss finish. A paint's gloss level is determined by the smoothness of the finish. To make paint less glossy, a flattening agent is used that adds tiny particles to the paint, which disrupts the smoothness of the finish. This gives the paint a satin or matte finish depending on the amount of flattening agent used.
Normally around 15% by weight. Some acrylic polyurethane's come in a "satin" or 20% gloss finish. These can be brought down to a full matte finish by adding the flattening agent. If a gloss finish is needed, then an overcoat of gloss clear must be applied after the original coat is dry.
